FULL ENCIRCLEMENT STEEL SLEEVE

Reli Sleeve manufactures a broad line of full encirclement steel sleeves that allow pipeline owners and operators to secure cracked, corroded (internally or externally), dented, damaged, or leaking sections of pipe. The product is a metal wrap that is wrapped around the pipe for reinforcement and to keep the pressure inside the pipe constant. Welding together two partial sleeves around the pipe creates a full encirclement steel sleeve. These full-encirclement steel sleeves can only be fitted on pipes with a wall thickness of 0.188 to 0.750 inches.

The sleeve consists of two halves of a cylinder of pipe or two appropriately curved pieces of plate that are placed around the carrier pipe at the damaged area and after positioning, are joined by welding.

Type A Sleeve

Type A Sleeve Ends are not Circumferentially welded to the Carrier shaft. The type A sleeve can not hold an internal pressure but acts as a faulty area reinforcement. It is used only for fixing defects that are not leaked and which are not expected to increase during operation or in full comprehension of the damage and the growth rate.

Type A Sleeve is made of two curved steel plates or two-cylinder pipes wrapped in the faulty pipeline and connected with Welded Side seams after positioning.

Type B Sleeve

Type B Sleeve ends are circumferentially welded to the carrier plate. A sleeve type B is able to withstand internal pressure as the ends are sold to the carrier tubing. Sleeve type B may be used to fix leakage defects or defects that may eventually leak and to improve the pipe’s axial load carrying capacity. The ends of a sleeve of type B are supplied to the carrier pot. If the ends of the carrier pipe are connected, a type B pipe may be used to correct the leakage and reinforce circumferential defects.

PRINCIPAL OPERATION OF FULL ENCIRCLEMENT STEEL SLEEVE

The early work by Battelle showed that steel sleeves are effective because they restrain bulging, or accumulation of strain, in the defective area while absorbing only 15 to 20 per cent of the hoop stress in the carrier pipe. Steel sleeves are effective because the stiffness (elastic modulus) of the sleeve material is equivalent to that of the line pipe steel.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF FULL ENCIRCLEMENT STEEL SLEEVE

One of the claimed advantages of composite repairs over steel sleeves is that their installation requires no welding to an in-service pipeline. It is clear from the discussion above that the installation of Type A sleeves, which can serve the same purpose as composite repairs, also requires no welding to an in-service pipeline. Welds that do not contact the carrier pipe are not considered to be “÷in-service’ welds according to Appendix B of API 1104, even though longitudinal seam welds are made while the pipeline is in-service.

WELDING ONTO AN IN-SERVICE PIPELINE

A burnthrough, or blowout as it is sometimes referred, will occur when welding onto a pressurised pipe if the unmelted area beneath the weld pool has insufficient strength to contain the internal pressure of the pipe (see Figure 6). A burnthrough typically results in a small pinhole in the bottom of what was the weld pool. The risk of burnthrough will increase as the pipe wall thickness decreases and the weld penetration increases.

FULL ENCIRCLEMENT SLEEVE (FULL WRAP)

A full encirclement sleeve (full wrap) is a metal wrap installed around pipe for reinforcement and containing pressure. The full sleeve is produced by welding together two half sleeves around pipe. Sleeves are only permitted to be installed on pipe having a wall thickness between .188 and .750 inches.

PROPERTIES OF FULL ENCIRCLEMENT STEEL SLEEVE

There are two primary categories of full-encirclement steel sleeves: Type A and Type B.There are two main issues with welding onto in-service pipelines, be it for fitting repair sleeves or installing a branch connection prior to “hot tapping”. The first one being “burn through”, where the pipe wall gets penetrated due to the welding arc. The second issue is called as hydrogen cracking, since welds made in-service cool at an increasing rate because of the ability of the flowing contents to extract the heat from the pipe wall.

MATERIALS USED FOR FULL ENCIRCLEMENT STEEL SLEEVE

The material of the Full encirclement Steel Sleeve provided by Reli Pipes is certified. Each half-sole segmentis inclusive of one pre-crimped back-up strip.

Full encirclement Steel Sleeve are available in four types of material, two pressure-rated steels and two structural-grade steel. The pressure-rated steel sleeves are utilised for repairing leaking and non-leaking damages while the structural-grade steel sleeves can be used as a reinforcement for the damaged area.

PRODUCTION OF FULL ENCIRCLEMENT STEEL SLEEVE

Reli Sleeve manufactures Full encirclement Steel Sleeves from the highest grade carbon steel material. We produce this premium quality product by rolling, die forming and step braking and hence they never undergo heat treating. Thus making our expertise & technique unique and supreme most in the industry.

CUSTOMISATION OF FULL ENCIRCLEMENT STEEL SLEEVE

We bevel the longitudinal edges of the pipe for welding if a client specifically asks for it. Full encirclement Steel Sleeves ends have shaved square edges to enable fillet welding, although square end bevel can also be made as per client specification. Our pipe sleeves are made with only those carbon steel plates having low carbon equivalency to ensure good weldability. We can manufacture Full encirclement Steel Sleeves in any custom steel grades and of any size as per the application & requirement of the customer.
